Obesity is a major problem in Western cultures, increasing the likelihood of diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoarthritis.

A simple solution may be to eat less, in what is known in the scientific community and caloric restriction. It is well documented in several animal and cellular models, that a 30-50% calorie restriction, not only can reduce the incidence of cancer and diabetes, but also improve resistance to stress and reduce other age-related functional capacity decreases and mental.

What is remarkable about calorie restriction is that once your body gets used to lower calories, physiologically operates more efficiently and acquire improved metabolic profile. These and other observations have led to studies with the goal of finding compounds that can mimic caloric restriction without having to cut calories.

Resveratrol is a compound with the ability to activate the same proteins also activated when animals or cells were subjected to caloric restriction, which is remarkable. However, although many studies have been conducted on human cells, few studies have been conducted in humans.

In a study published in the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers did just that (Cell Metabolism, 2011, vol. 14 page 612). The researchers gave obese people (but who otherwise do not suffer from any other condition), a dietary supplement of trans-resveratrol from more than thirty days and then examines various physiological parameters, including the cost of the whole body , energy, fat storage and the ability of fat tissue to the molecules of fat breakdown.

What became apparent and important in the study was that the data showed important changes that were seen in caloric restriction. Within thirty days resveratrol was able to reduce energy expenditure, improve the metabolic profile and improve general health parameters (such as decreased glucose concentrations , insulin and triglycerides in the blood).

Two recent studies point to resveratrol as a possible therapeutic tool for HIV. In a recent 2010 study in the Journal of Cellular Biology, researchers observed that an HIV protein, called Tat, that is critical for activating various HIV proteins and helps the replication of the virus, can be inactivated by the SIRT1 protein. However, it was observed that when the HIV virus infected cells, it initially will shut down any SIRT1 activity. One of the major findings that the researchers made through this study was that resveratrol could reactivate SIRT1 activity in the affected cells. This was a breakthrough as it appears that the researchers found that resveratrol reversed the cellular changes made by HIV, which was not thought possible.

With these findings the researchers found that resveratrol and other molecules that target SIRT1, would need to be studied further as possible therapeutic tools against cellular changes that make it easy for HIV to spread to other cells. While SIRT1 activation is important and appears to limit HIV replication, another study focuses on a different aspect of HIV, the side effects of current drugs that are used for it’s treatment.

The second article published in the journal AIDS, focuses on the harmful side-effects of the antiretroviral therapy. In this second study, resveratrol was used to see if it could help protect cells. Currently the HIV infection is treated with an antiretroviral therapy composed of protease inhibitors. However, the therapy has adverse side-effects that include among other things, the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can cause oxidative damage. An overproduction of ROS can lead to memory issues in animals and current studies demonstrate that the accumulation of ROS can decrease an organism’s fitness as oxidative damage is a contributor to senescence, mitochondria deficiency with implications on overall aging.

In this study, the researchers treated regular human cells with resveratrol and some of the commonly used therapeutic drugs utilized to treat HIV infected patients. The results were positive. All parameters tested by the researchers indicated that the resveratrol, reduced the side-effects caused by the protease inhibitors.

The above findings open the door for further studies on using resveratrol as a therapeutic tool in the treatment of AIDS. A further study to help clarify this would need to be done to see if the researchers would address whether resveratrol has any effect on the normal function of these antiretroviral drugs in fighting HIV.

Resveratrol has garnered the attention of the scientists, in different aspects of health research. These continuous ongoing positive studies are making it a point for people who want to lead a healthy fulfilling life, to seriously consider it a staple of daily life. Although resveratrol is available in dark grapes, people who do not have easy access large quantities of dark red grapes should consider high purity micronized resveratrol supplements. Many find resveratrol supplements convenient, and most want to take something that is as close as possible to that which is used in various studies.

Since most studies dissolve resveratrol in ethanol to increase it’s absorption before being used in animal or cellular studies, we suggest considering micronized resveratrol as the small particles are close to the size used in many of the studies. Supplements produced to exact specifications, really help ensure that you can always get the benefits of resveratrol, without considering carrying around large amounts of grapes that can spoil or the alcohol found in most red wines.

Resveratrol, a phytochemical found in red grapes and red wine and attributed with several health therapeutic qualities, is now reported to be successful in treating human alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Scientists from the University of South Florida Health Sciences Center in Tampa reported their success using resveratrol to treat liver diseases like cirrhosis and fibrosis.

This study was conducted on mice and showed that with the use of resveratrol, livers of mice showed less build of fat that causes damage to liver and that often leads to complete liver failure.

In this study, which is reported in the American Journal of Physiology — Gastrointestinal and Live Physiology, the researchers used mice that were given either resveratrol or alcohol, or had both resveratrol and alcohol included in their diet.

The results proved that the combination of resveratrol and alcohol was most effective in stimulating the production of AMPK and SIRT1 – proteins responsible for breaking down of fat and removing it from liver.

In addition, the combined intake of resveratrol and alcohol led to the reduction in proteins that lead to fat build up and an increase in adiponectin, a hormone that metabolizes fat.

This means that resveratrol acts in a twofold manner. On the one hand it curbs the build-up fat and on the other, it helps in metabolizing the liver fat, thus offering a two-fold protection to the liver.

Resveratrol has already been found to provide protection to the nervous system and heart, as well as provided benefits for diabetic patients by helping the brain in the regulation of insulin production.

It is also attributed to impart longevity and enhanced energy levels and is reportedly effective in treating several types of cancers and tumors. Recent research has also proved it to be a welcoming alternative to HRT that is found to be associated with various detrimental side effects for the users.

The large number of health enhancing properties of resveratrol has led to tremendous interest in research about its presence in various natural ingredients. For example, earlier resveratrol was considered to be available in red grapes or red wine and some nuts alone.

But recent research has found concentrations of resveratrol in cocoa and cocoa products. Similarly, various supplements of resveratrol are available in the market that contain the same benefits as drinking red wine.

These supplements come in a form that is easy to intake and store and that can be had at anytime of the year. The supplements are especially beneficial for people who do not drink wine due to their religious or other beliefs, but who would like to benefit from the wondrous effects of resveratrol.

In a new study presented at the conference of the Society for Neuroscience in Atlanta, it was revealed that resveratrol considerably lowered the chances of having a stroke. This study proves that resveratrol directly impacts on the brain functions and protects against stroke and it is in line with other research findings that have established resveratrol as a potent factor in affecting brain to regulate and control blood sugar.

The researchers found that infusion of resveratrol leads to enhanced levels of heme oxygen, an enzyme that protects brain cell damage. It is through these heme oxygen enzymes’ ability to ensure protection from free radical damage that resveratrol is able to trigger the process for lowering the risk of stroke.

The research was carried out using moderate doses of resveratrol on some of the laboratory mice and then affecting stroke like damage to their brains. It was found that the mice that had been pre-treated with resveratrol were vastly protected from brain damage. In fact the researchers found over 40 percent less brain damage in mice that had had resveratrol given to them than those who were kept on a regular diet.

The above findings are encouraging as they point out to yet another powerful health benefit of resveratrol, a chemical found in red grapes, red wine and some nuts. There have been scores of other general as well as specific benefits revealed of consuming this phytochemical. Resveratrol’s general health benefits include providing longevity, high energy levels and protection against various diseases like cardiovascular and degenerative.

Its specific benefits range from its ability to treat menopausal symptoms without any side-effects like HRT does, its ability to enhance vulnerability of pancreatic cancel cells to chemotherapy, its potency in reducing influenza virus’ efficacy, and its ability to make HIV more sensitive to drugs. While resveratrol has been traditionally identified as providing health benefits, it is only now as the research has progressed that some amazing benefits of resveratrol are being illustrated.

Being packed with numerous health benefits, resveratrol has gained attention of the researchers as well as the people who want to lead a healthy fulfilling life. Resveratrol is available in red grapes and its benefits are further enhanced through the fermentation process that red wine has to undergo.

However, for people who do not have easy access to red grapes or who are averse to drinking wine, there are several supplements available in the market. These supplements come in convenient packaging and are easy to use and ensure that whatever your lifestyle is, you can always get the benefits of resveratrol.

A new study reported in the journal of the Endocrine Society, Endocrinology, has provided useful insights about resveratrol and its impacts on people suffering from diabetes. Previous studies have already established that consuming resveratrol leads to benefits in diabetic patients, but the latest research has brought forth the mechanism by which resveratrol actually does so. It is found that resveratrol not only benefits and strengthens the pancreatic functioning, but that its affects are mediated through the brain itself.

The research, conducted using laboratory mice focused on the effects of infusing resveratrol directly into the brains of diabetic mice. It was seen that sirtuins, which are proteins expressed in those parts of the brain that regulate glucose metabolism, were activated by resveratrol. By using resveratrol over a period of time the researchers found that both hyperglycemia or high blood sugar and hyperinsulinemia or the excess levels of insulin in the blood were normalized for the animals.

The capacity of resveratrol to stimulate sirtuins and lead to the control of diabetes adds yet another dimension to the highly remarkable properties of resveratrol that are coming to light as research advances into this amazing phytochemical. Resveratrol is readily available in natural foods and drinks like red grapes, nuts and red wine, and there are numerous resveratrol supplements that can be had to reap its wide range of benefits.

These results of this research were conclusive as the researchers had controlled for variables like food-intake and leptin hormone which regulates appetite and metabolic rate levels in the animals. The findings imply that resveratrol has the potential to impact upon the human brain to intervene and control blood sugar and regulate insulin, and it has opened new areas for the treatment of type 2 diabetes using resveratrol.

Resveratrol, with many of its already documented benefits to health – like its ability to provide protection against degenerative diseases and cardiovascular problems, its ability to enhance liver and pancreatic functions, its anti-ageing properties – is now proved to have a direct and potent impact on the human brain. This discovery of the specific impact of resveratrol on the brain is of immense interest for both the diabetic people as well as for researchers.

Recent researchers have largely focused on impacts of resveratrol on different parts of the body in order to find cures for chronic or irremediable conditions like HIV and cancer. There have been encouraging findings about resveratrol proving beneficial in treating pancreatic cancel cells by making them more sensitive to radiation, and of resveratrol’s efficacy in making HIV more responsive to antiviral drugs. It has also been proposed as an alternative treatment to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) that has been found to show numerous debilitating side effects.

Latest research with resveratrol has found some hope-giving results for people suffering from pancreatic cancer and who undergo chemotherapy with little respite. Pancreatic cancer cells are tough to destroy and highly resilience in the face of chemotherapy. This is because pancreas are mainly involved in producing and flushing enzymes into the duodenum, and in the process, they also flush out the chemicals used in chemotherapy, thus lowering the overall impact of the treatment.

The new study has been able to prove that resveratrol can well be a potent factor in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The research was conducted using pancreatic cancer cells and treating some of them with 50 mg of resveratrol prior to iodizing them to simulate chemotherapy.

The results showed that those cancer cells that had been treated with resveratrol became more sensitive to the effects of chemotherapy. While the exact mechanism by which this happens has yet not been fully understood, it was seen that resveratrol lowered the ability of the cancerous cell’s cell membrane proteins to pump out the fluids.

Resveratrol also damaged the mitochondria of these cells thus lowering their overall functional capacity. Researchers also found that resveratrol led to an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species that led to enhanced pancreatic cancer cells apoptosis (or programmed cell death).

This study, reported in Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology Journal, is in line with the recent interest in exploring specific impacts of resveratrol. The general benefits of resveratrol, based on its ability to remove free radicals from the body, are well documented in the form of protection against cardiovascular diseases and degenerative diseases and as anti-aging agent.

This highly potent ingredient can be taken in the form of red wine, red grapes and certain types of nuts. However, resveratrol supplements that are readily available and easy to use are a convenient option.

The specific impacts of resveratrol are only now being researched, with some very interesting outcomes coming to light. For example, different studies have found that resveratrol makes HIV more sensitive to antiviral drugs, reduces the impact of influenza virus and reduce the detrimental impacts of a high-fat diet.

Recent research has also found that resveratrol is a better alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for treating menopausal symptoms owing to its zero side-effects. The resveratrol’s impact on pancreatic tumor cells by making them more sensitive to radiation has shown that the total benefits and therapeutic gains of resveratrol are yet to be revealed.

A new study has shown that resveratrol can be the alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) that is used extensively in the treatment of menopausal symptoms but that is also attributed with dire side effects like breast cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Resveratrol is already linked to benefits like high energy levels and enhanced muscle strength.

Other benefits of resveratrol consumption include protection against degenerative diseases, enhanced heart and kidney function, protection against several types of cancers and also longevity.

Now, there is just another reason to welcome resveratrol as a part of our daily diet. The study, reported in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, aimed to compare effectiveness of resveratrol with that of genistein, glystein and daidzein – which are soy-derivatives and known natural treatments for menopause symptoms.

It is reported that resveratrol not only is more potent than others in its proapoptotic (killing tumor cells) ability, it also shows no side-effects that manifest with the use of estrogens and progestin in HRT. The research findings may well revolutionize the natural treatments available for women suffering from the symptoms of menopause.

Traditional remedies for alleviating menopause symptoms range from the natural home-made therapies with ingredients like red clover and soy or their supplements to Hormone Replacement Therapy. However, there has always been a dilemma inherent in the use of either the natural therapies or HRT.

The Hormone Replacement Therapy that is the most popular estrogen based treatment for menopausal symptoms, has been found to carry the risks of increased chances of stroke, heart disease, blood clots and breast cancer. Alternate natural therapies, though having no apparent debilitating side-effects may be lacking in efficacy.

The natural remedies have been repeatedly reported as being alternate solutions with no side-effects, but the latest study makes the plant chemicalresveratrol take head on with HRT. What is more, resveratrol is available in foods and drinks that may already be a part of our normal diet. For example, red grapes, grape skins, grape juice and red wine are rich sources of resveratrol.

Additionally, there are numerous resveratrol supplements already available in the market that people can start on. These supplements are convenient to store and easy to use. The findings about resveratrol may finally mean deliverance for innumerable women who suffer from symptoms like hot flashes or vaginal dryness or who are at a higher risk for osteoporosis due to low estrogen levels.

With resveratrol, not only the side effects related with HRT are non-existent, there are added advantages of enhanced energy levels, longevity and protection against numerous diseases.

Many are curious about the health benefits of resveratrol. With extensive research and experiments, it will take over a long period of time to really determine the long term health benefits that resveratrol can produce.

Many are unaware of the fact that resveratrol supplements have been around for a long time. Resveratrol can be primarily found under the skin of the grape, which is also present in wine, especially red wine. Researchers have suggested resveratrol in red wine is the cause of the “French Paradox”.

The “French Paradox” is the theory and puzzling fact of the reason why people located in southern France enjoy high dietary intake of saturated fats, but yet suffer less incidence of coronary heart disease.

It’s not a proven fact the resveratrol from red wine is the cause of this but there’s evidence that the wine has something to do with it. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that is known to help protect the heart. This is done by neutralizing the free radicals in the body; the elimination of free radicals can provide life prolonging effects.

Not only have studies conducted that resveratrol is beneficial for your heart for healthy blood circulation, it also has positive effects on inhibiting cancer.

Resveratrol may inhibit a list of cancerous tumors which include, prostate cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, liver cancer, brain cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, colon cancer, ovarian and cervical cancer, lymphoma, and it also has been linked to act as an anti-leukemia agent.

With these three steps, initiation, promotion and progression it appears resveratrol is able to selectively target, kill cancer cells and stop them from spreading. Benefits of resveratrol have been in intense interest because of its anti-oxidant, cardio protective, anti-aging, and anti cancer properties.

As of today no humans have reported and concluded any risk to the resveratrol supplements. Since resveratrol has mainly been tested on animals rather than humans, it still has been promoted for a wide variety of uses. This includes the prevention of heart disease, cancer, and improving cholesterol levels.

Resveratrol has potential to prevent cell damage. This will help to prolong effects through the cell renewal.

With resveratrol supplements it can also help you lose weight. Resveratrol can be an effective suppressant without the jitters. Resveratrol supplements may also increase your lifespan, which appears to improve function of the cell mitochondria. Insulin production in the pancreas can be regulated with the help of resveratrol.

Resveratrol supplements appear to approve the function of the cell mitochondria, which would produce more energy for you. You can also see skin improvement with resveratrol. Resveratrol in some studies may improve skin elasticity and smoothness. When it comes to purchasing the resveratrol supplement, all supplements are not the same.

Take some time to read the labels and compare ingredients. This way you will know exactly what you are getting. A lot may wonder, is there a maximum dosage of resveratrol that you should consume. In most studies so far, if you do take large amounts of resveratrol supplements, it is not toxic to humans. On the other hand women who are pregnant or children should not take resveratrol at all.

Also you should make sure if you have any health problems or if you are taking any medications you should consult your physician before trying to take resveratrol supplements. Resveratrol supplements are a completely all natural product. It also has a low degree of side effects.

These supplements have true potential and it has come out at a good start. Once more information is available for people to learn about all the great benefits resveratrol supplements can bring these supplements will be selling off the shelves. Resveratrol supplements are a great way to become healthier and decrease the obesity rate within Americans. This could be the next big step Americans need to cure their health problems.

Resveratrol made headlines in 2006; this substance was researched from Scientists which concluded results of a study of overfed mice who stopped gaining further weight from the resveratrol substance. The mice became fit, healthier and slow down their aging process with resveratrol. Now scientist have been researching and looking for ways on how these results can be used and reflected in human use.

Resveratrol is located in Red Wine, but can also been found in grapes and grape juice. So if you do not drink, eating grapes and drinking grape juice can be good beneficial alternatives. Another alternative is taking a resveratrol supplement, not only can this supplement produce weight loss it can also prevent anti–aging as well. Studies have found that you can use resveratrol to speed up your metabolism to help you burn more calories throughout the day.

With a combination of diet and exercise of course, a resveratrol supplement can help you lose weight. Every weight loss programs does not work out for everyone, but resveratrol is just another option for people to try another weight loss method that could work for them. The epidemic of obesity in American’s has been growing and is still growing. Many people have been categorized as being obese and diagnosed with health problems ranging from heart disease, sleep apnea, diabetes, and many more serious problems. This is because of America’s poor health and dietary habits. With the lack of healthy eating habits and regular exercise, American’s health habits have become worse.

Scientists believe that resveratrol can be a solution to this problem. Asia began selling the first dietary supplement for resveratrol a few years ago. To produce weight loss with resveratrol, it works to decrease obesity; this is done by reducing the amount of calories that come from the daily foods we intake. When resveratrol is combined with diet and exercise, resveratrol can be the bump to get us over the hump when we’re trying to lose weight. A lot of testimonials have said that the resveratrol supplements have had a significant outcome with success with a weight loss program. Everyone wants to live longer, look younger, and be healthier, right, than taking a resveratrol supplement may be a good idea.

Since, red wine is one of the primary sources of resveratrol because of the flavonoids located in the red grapes. The red grapes are where the highest quality of the resveratrol substance is located. Many doctors recommend you to take the resveratrol supplements, and pills instead. Alcohol should only be consumed in moderation and too much alcohol consumption can disrupt your health and mental acuity.

Another factor resveratrol suppresses is estrogen. Estrogen which is suppressed can decrease body fat and it can also increase muscle mass. This is another reason how resveratrol supplements can provide wonderful weight loss results. A resveratrol diet in recent studies has concluded that resveratrol diets may counter diabetes and insulin resistance. These are also two known culprits of obesity. Many people who are interested in the resveratrol diet are unaware of what is really is. For starters, you have to first purchase a resveratrol supplement. When using resveratrol diet supplements, you will have to take one daily every morning with your daily vitamin. You will next have to change your daily calorie intake.

Depending on if you’re a male or female will determine your daily calories intake. You will also have to limit your carbohydrate intake. Try not to consume sugary or starchy carbohydrates after 6pm. Eat often, do not over eat, and try 5 small meals daily. Increasing your protein should be followed as well. Increase fluids, drinking a gallon of water a day would be excellent. Lastly, get active; following a regular exercise plan will be very beneficial with your weight loss goals combined with the resveratrol supplements.

Today, many people are focused on learning about new ways to become healthier. A good percentage of society is unhealthy, so why wouldn’t we try to find new ways to improve our health.

Resveratrol is located in red wine, which may be heart healthy after all. Of course, you should only consume red wine in moderation just like any other alcoholic beverage. Antioxidants are located in red wine, which could be the key to help prevent heart disease. This can also help you can increase the levels of good cholesterol and protect against artery damage. This is good news for people who have a glass of wine with their evening meal, but doctors are not trying to promote drinking alcohol.

Consuming too much alcohol is bad for you and can have some harmful effects of the body. Doctors still agree that red wine can be good for your heart when drunk in moderation. It just unclear as what is that something in the red wine that can help your heart.

Resveratrol and Flavonoids have been known to promise heart-healthy benefits. Not only are these antioxidants an important factor in red wine but the alcohol itself has appeared to be very heart healthy as well. In some research studies, results have concluded that red wine has been the most beneficial than any other alcoholic beverage to produce a healthy heart. While on the other hand, other studies have concluded that red wine is not even better than beer, white liquor, or liquor in general for heart health. Furthermore, the evidence is still not completely clear if red wine is superior over other alcohol, to produce healthy heart benefits.

Resveratrol is known to be the main ingredient to help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce bad cholesterol and prevent blood clots. A lot of research that has been conducted on resveratrol was tested on animals rather than people. Researches on mice have concluded that resveratrol can protect them from obesity and diabetes. Both obesity and diabetes are strong risk factors to produce heart disease. These results were only concluded within mice not people. Other studies have also conducted that resveratrol can be linked to reduce the risk of blood clotting and risk of inflammation. Those two can also lead into heart disease.

More research still has to be conducted to prove that resveratrol is the main factor in the reduction. The research of resveratrol is being continued to be tested, to learn more about how it really works. Resveratrol that is located in red wine comes from the skin of the grapes that is used to make the wine. Since red wine is fermented with the grape skin more than white wine, red wine has a higher percentage of resveratrol located in it. If you do not want to consume alcohol, eating grapes or drinking grape juice are alternatives to get resveratrol without even taking a sip of red wine.

Other studies have concluded that red and purple juices can have the same heart healthy benefits. Having a glass of red wine to receive resveratrol can be fine; you have to remember that drinking in moderation is what’s best for you and your body. Alcohol can be very addictive that’s why researchers don’t recommend you to start drinking if you do not drink. Drinking too much can also put you at risk for high blood pressure, liver damage, obesity, and many more problems, so drinking in moderation is the smart decision. The red wine benefits can look promising, but more research does have to be done to fully say that resveratrol in red wine is better for you than any other alcoholic beverage to improve the heart. If you shy away from alcohol, it’d be best to start taking a resveratrol supplement instead. This way, you still get the benefits, without the alcohol content.

It’s a fairly common belief in herbal medicine that the plants that people need tend to naturally grow near them. Regardless of if you believe that, or feel that it’s more of an old wives tale, when you take a closer look at the kinds of medicinal weeds and herbs that grow wild in cities, and the specific types of conditions that are widespread there, you’ll find that it’s either true, or just an interesting coincidence.

Many cities are currently overrun by a specific kind of aggressive plant called Japanese Knotweed. It can grow very quickly, taking over whole hillsides within a few weeks, much to the disappointment of the gardener or landscaper. The plant also contains its own type of natural herbicide, which ends up killing a lot of the surrounding plant life. This allows it to grow much quicker than many other types of roots and weeds. You may ask yourself,” How could there possibly be a benefit from this type of plant?”
Surprisingly, the Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) is one of the highest natural resveratrol resources. Many people believe that drinking red wine is the only way to receive resveratrol, but now many different kinds of supplements are available that can give you the same exact benefits. Although not from red wine, but from Japanese Knotweed.

When this malicious weed first rises out of the ground in early spring, the shoots are very tender, have a lemony taste and are edible. They are most commonly steamed and eaten as if they were an asparagus. They also go great in juice form, if you have the right type of juice blender.

The popularity of resveratrol seems to be talked about everywhere these days, including its health benefits, high profile of antioxidants, regulation of hormones and thinning of the blood. The central nervous system also seems to naturally recover more quickly with the help of resveratrol. Resveratrol is also being seen as a possible future cancer treatment, but it seems that more research needs to be done first.

Notice the types of weeds and plants that are around your neighborhood the next time you’re out for a walk, or bike ride. A wild edible plant guide is vital is you’re planning to actually attempt to identify and eat a certain type of weed. Although, if you’re looking to simply get the benefits of resveratrol, it’s much faster and easier to go with a resveratrol supplement, that gives you the same exact benefits in a higher concentration.

It’s seen a lot of news coverage lately, even appearing on 60 minutes. It’s resveratrol, a natural anti-aging compound that’s naturally found in in red wine, and to a lesser extent in blueberries and nuts. Here, we’ll give you an overview of some of the benefits of this wonderful substance.

It is a very potent anti-aging compound, as we previously mentioned. It can mimic the effects of a calorie-restricted diet, which has been shown to reduce the effects of aging on the body. A University of Wisconsin study seems to confirm this. Resveratrol can have the same effect as restricting calories by 20-30%, even if you don’t change a thing about your diet.

This substance may also reduce the amount of fat in your body, and could, in the future, be used to combat obesity. The Endocrine Society’s 90th annual meeting touted this fantastic discovery. Resveratrol may also work to protect your heart. The potent antioxidants found in red wine may help in the regulation of blood sugar levels, by slowing the absorption of carbohydrates into the bloodstream. This in turn will help keep blood pressure lower, and possibly prevent heart disease.

Resveratrol may also improve breast health. It can inhibit the growth of abnormal cells that can lead to a lot of types of breast cancer. This information is according to a study that was published in a July 2008 edition of Cancer Prevention Research. Taking resveratrol may prevent the progression of the disease.

A study from the American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology discovered that resveratrol may keep fatty deposits from building up in the liver, a condition frequently found in those who consume a lot of alcohol. It may activate two molecules (AMPK and SiRT1) which send signals to cells concerning the metabolism of fat in the liver. These molecules can be stunted by alcohol, which can lead to the buildup of fat in the liver..

Resveratrol is also a potent antibacterial agent. It can help protect you from food-born sicknesses, according to a University of Missouri study. Red wines such as pinot noirs and cabernets can block food-borne germs without killing off those beneficial probiotics. Ethanol and resveratrol were both found to have this effect.

In short, you should definitely give it a try. It can fight disease, and is a great anti-aging compound (and the research has been done to prove it!) New research is being done every day, and we are finding more and more things to like about resveratrol.

When it comes to Resveratrol, you really couldn’t name a more famous discovery within this modern day and age. Resveratrol has been talked about everywhere, from the newspapers to the internet. Resveratrol has stepped into the door with a reputation that remains very solid.

With that said, there have been many research studies on Resveratrol, and understanding how the dosage works when it comes to Resveratrol will alleviate the concerns of many people who are looking at adding Resveratrol into their lifestyle.

Although, when it comes to Resveratrol dosage, the results can differentiate depending upon the person.

That’s right. The dosage that works great for one person can be different on another person who tried that exact same dosage that worked great for the other person. The statistics of Resveratrol dosages are usually done by testing the level in your blood or through a urinalysis where the Resveratrol level is found as well.

Understanding the different Resveratrol dosage levels.
This can help you out quite a bit when it comes to understanding Resveratrol dosage intakes.

Low Resveratrol Dosage: This is usually considered to be 100-500MG of Resveratrol per day.

Medium Resveratrol Dosage: This is 500-1500MG of Resveratrol per day.

High Resveratrol Dosage: This is over 1500MG of Resveratrol per day.

These dosage levels are definitely pretty confrontational when they’re discussed by professionals. How much a supplement should take is only one of many factors involved in this. When it comes down to it, nobody knows what is right for you besides your doctor. Therefore, before taking Resveratrol, you should seek medical advice from your regular physician.

Keep in mind, your doctor is the only one that can help you effectively when it comes to choosing your Resveratrol dosage level. It is highly important that you let your doctor know about any particular medications that you think you could be allergic to, this way you’re not mixing Resveratrol with anything that could cause a harmful reaction.

There are many other things that need to be looked at closely before jumping onto the Resveratrol bus. However, the best Resveratrol supplements will have information that could answer any questions that you may have about taking a Resveratrol supplement. Hopefully, this article helped you understand Resveratrol a little bit more. After all, it is a great discovery that has changed the live of many people from different parts of the world. It could be the solution you need! If you’re thinking of trying out a resveratrol supplement, feel free to click the links on the right hand side of this post in the box labeled “Recommended Resveratrol” to see current recommendations.

Antioxidants have been the buzz word in the health industry for quite some time, many can be found in various fruits and vegetables but a new antioxidant compound called resveratrol is making waves in the fight for better health.

Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, produced naturally by several plants and found in certain foods, including wines. This powerful antioxidant is believed to help prevent heart disease and certain cancers, in addition to reducing inflammation and increasing metabolism to aid fat loss.

There is a reason resveratrol is the new kid on the block, if you’re looking to add some antioxidant punch into your daily diet, take a look at the five power foods below for help:

Blue Berries
Remember that scene in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory—the original one not the crappy remake—where the girl turns into a giant blueberry? Well rest assured; she had her fill of resveratrol, because blueberries are jam packed with them. Although they don’t have nearly as much resveratrol as other fruits, they still pack a healthy antioxidant punch.

Peanuts
Who would have thought that peanuts are actually healthy for you in moderation? Yes, the same thing that gives us the creamy goodness of peanut butter also holds a few key antioxidants to keep us from aging prematurely and gaining excess fat. The next time you see that really big scary peanut wearing a monocle and a top hat, give him thanks for the heart healthy benefits of peanuts.

Cranberries
Ask yourself how much cranberry juice do you drink on a monthly basis, and no, that concentrate sugar loaded and sweetened with high fructose corn syrup does not count. We’re talking about pure cranberry juice here—no, cranberry vodka martinis don’t count either. Ok, enough with the cranberries but you should definitely consider making them a staple in your diet, not only are they chock full of resveratrol, they also have been scientifically proven to increase your metabolism and clear complexion.

Grapes
A favorite snack for ages, Egyptian pharos believed these to slow aging and clear complexion—hence the hieroglyphics of them being hand fed on a throne. The amount of resveratrol found in grapes is ten times that of blueberries, this gives grapes the high award for antioxidant goodness. Not only are grapes an abundant source of free radical killing antioxidants, but they sure taste good too.

Red Wine
Red red wine was actually a song with a secret subliminal message to get everyone to drink more to increase his or her chance of living long and healthy lives. Ok, that was just a joke, but I’m sure you’ve heard that a glass of red wine a day is actually good for you–yes, one glass, not the whole bottle. Resveratrol is mixed in with the wine through the grape skins during the fermentation process. This makes red wine one of the most human friendly drinks known to man, toast!

The antioxidant resveratrol is only the most recent beneficial discovery, further proving that no man-made drug can beat the disease-fighting and health-enhancing properties of Nature’s bounty. When the body is nourished in the physical sense, it has a better chance of surviving an onslaught from an invading virus or bacteria. Resveratrol is found in the seeds and roots of grapes, but the highest concentration is found in the skin. The resveratrol protects the grapes against fungi and microorganisms, and there is more of this beneficial compound in red grapes.

Other sources of resveratrol include peanuts, mulberries, and a plant called Japanese knotweed (available in health-food stores, and widely used in Asian traditional medicine). Red wine has the most resveratrol of almost any food or drink, with over 600 micrograms per gram. This may go a long way toward explaining “the French paradox”, the perplexing way that the French can enjoy a relatively high-fat diet and have relatively low levels of cardiac disease. For the most benefit, limit wine intake to two glasses daily. Easily done- just have a glass or two when you come home from work. Or, increase your intake of fruits and vegetables containing resveratrol.

Resveratrol may also inhibit tumor growth, forcing the immune system to fight the cancer cells. This compound has anti-aging benefits as well, showing up to a 50% increase in lifespan in certain animals. Who knows how much resveratrol can do for us? More benefits are being discovered every day.

Scientific research shows that resveratrol can slow the functional decline and aging of mice that are on a regular diet, but it hasn’t been proven to increase lifespan if started at what’s considered “middle age”. A National Institute on Aging (NIA) study supports a 2006 finding that resveratrol enhances the lifespan and health of older, overweight mice. This research suggests that resveratrol, which can be found in grapes, blueberries, and nuts, mimics the effects of caloric restriction. A calorie-restricted diet is one of the most effective ways to lessen the incidence of age-associated disease and deterioration.

This discovery may mean more interest in resveratrol as an anti-aging supplement, but it should be noted that the findings are based on animal research- and that the data may not apply to people. A person’s health is affected by more variables than that of a mouse. The NIA study is a joint effort between the Laboratory of Experimental Gerontology, Dr. David Sinclair of the Glenn Laboratory for Molecular Biology and Aging at Harvard Medical School, and an international research team. Different groups of mice were fed a high-calorie diet, a standard diet, and an every-other day feeding plan, with or without resveratrol supplementation. This experiment was intended to examine the impact of resveratrol on longevity and health. In other studies, caloric restriction has been shown to improve health..

Ongoing research seeks to understand the aging process, and how supplements can put a stop to it. Caloric restriction can improve health, as we mentioned earlier, and resveratrol can mimic the effects of a low-calorie diet in mice- but its effects on people remain to be seen. The compound prevented age- and obesity-associated heart function decline, with a reduction in cholesterol for the non-overweight mice, and a slight drop in triglyceride levels. The arteries of both overweight and normal-weight mice functioned better with resveratrol, and cardiac inflammation decreased as well.

Other positive effects in mice included:

Better bone health, when volume, thickness, density and stiffness were measured.

Enhanced coordination and balanced with age. Fewer cataracts were reported as well.

Resveratrol mimicked the effects of caloric restriction on the bones, liver, and fatty tissue.

Resveratrol showed beneficial effects on the health of the mice, and it might also lengthen lifespan for mice on a calorie-restricted diet. No effect was shown for mice on a standard diet, suggesting that resveratrol doesn’t affect the entire aging process. Mice on an every-other day feeding plan lived longer than the mice on a high-calorie diet, whether or not they received resveratrol. Effects on body weight and longevity may be independent of each other. Improved heart and liver health may have also lengthened the lives of the mice.

Resveratrol has immense promise as an anti-aging supplement, but its biological effect in humans remains to be seen. More human experiments need to be done to ensure resveratrol’s safe use in humans.

Resveratrol, extracted from grapes, blueberries, and many types of nuts, is enjoying a boost in popularity these days. It has many purported health and anti-aging benefits. Many different brands of resveratrol supplements are on the market, and some of the more unscrupulous manufacturers make disease-fighting claims that are expressly forbidden by the FDA- and their claims are backed up by dubious scientific research. As of today, there aren’t any known human studies on resveratrol supplementation, only anecdotal evidence gleaned from personal accounts of red wine drinkers.

Scientists know that resveratrol, once it’s exposed to heat, air and light, will degrade rapidly. This will decrease its health benefits, because only trans-resveratrol activates the SiRT1 gene that repairs DNA (a great anti-aging benefit!) Most supplements sold today contain high amounts of degraded resveratrol, making them mostly ineffective. One brand claims that it gives 400 mg. of red wine extract per pill- but “red wine extract” is just powdered red grapes, and it only provides about 1 mg of resveratrol per serving. Like a lot of other dietary supplements, resveratrol loses potency when it’s exposed to the elements, and it must be carefully preserved- through encapsulation and proper storage.

Resveratrol will undoubtedly enjoy a long period of popularity, but when it comes to getting “the real deal”, trans-resveratrol, it can be a game of trial and error. Do your research, and pick the one that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Recent research has shown that the antioxidant resveratrol, naturally found in grape skins and blueberries, may weaken pancreatic cancer cells, and make them more susceptible to chemo. It seems to make tumors more sensitive, while decreasing the sensitivity of normal cells.

Researchers treated cancer cells with 50 mg of resveratrol, then iodized them to mimic chemotherapy. A control group was also iodized without the resveratrol. Pancreatic cancer is particularly chemo-resistant, because the pancreas secretes enzymes that wash away the chemo drugs before they can work. In cells that had the resveratrol treatment, the enzymes that do the “washing” were inhibited. While we don’t know why this happened, it may be a new side effect of resveratrol. All antioxidants remove free radicals from the body. These free radicals contribute to aging, cardiovascular disease, and aging.

Scientists are working to find more beneficial effects from resveratrol. Studies have demonstrated that it will extend the lifespan of certain organisms, and even small fish. The fish in the study lived 50% longer than their untreated counterparts, and had better cognitive and motor abilities too. Other research shows that resveratrol protects plants from infection and makes the HIV virus more susceptible to drug treatment. In influenza-infected cells, treatment with resveratrol inhibited viral growth by 90% over the course of a day.

Resveratrol has also proven to increase stamina and endurance, and somewhat negate the effects of a high-fat diet. With all these beneficial effects, resveratrol is definitely worth a try.

It seems that resveratrol is making inroads with the mainstream media. In case you haven’t seen it, Dr. Oz was on the Oprah show, talking about different ways to reverse the aging process. For the average person, there are two main ways to minimize the signs of aging. One is caloric restriction, which is a diet that allows about 30% fewer calories than your average diet. Choosing nutrient dense foods that are lower in fat will allow you to take in fewer calories, while still maintaining nutrient balance for the body. It’s not a “starvation diet” at all! In fact, in experiments with mice and monkeys, a CR diet has been shown to increase lifespan.

You may be wondering: Will it work for people? A lot of us are trying it, and they are singing the praises of a calorie-restricted diet. But, not everyone has the self-discipline to stick with such a strict eating plan. Science is searching for an alternative, and it may have been found, in the form of resveratrol. It may activate the same “longevity gene”, (the SiRT1) as a calorie-restrictive diet. When he appeared on the Oprah show, Dr. Oz said that he felt resveratrol was safe, but he urged people to carefully research it before taking it.

The good news about resveratrol is spreading! You don’t always have to rely on commercial medications….Nature has its own ways of helping us feel better and live longer. Finally, the rest of the world is finding out what some have known for generations.

Resveratrol, a chemical produced by plants as a defense mechanism, might be the beneficial compound in red wine. This compound may improve the body’s anti-aging response, and in turn quality of life, according to a National Institute on Aging/Harvard Medical School joint study. Other studies have found that resveratrol lengthens lifespan in insects, fish, and yeast. It also improves the health of mice on a fat-laden diet.

In the study, the researchers gave a resveratrol supplement, once a day, to mice on both normal and calorie-restricted diets. The animals on the lower-calorie diet lived a lot longer than those on a “normal” diet, and showed less aging-related mental and physical deterioration. They also had fewer incidences of disease and stress. The mice on the normal diet experienced increased vigor and vitality over the length of the study, but they didn’t live any longer.

Resveratrol is found in high concentrations in the skins of red grapes, and also in red wine. It’s found in smaller amounts in peanut and walnut skins. Scientists aren’t sure if drinking red wine will produce the same benefits as taking a resveratrol supplement, because red wine contains a lot of other substances that have effects on the body. If resveratrol affects humans the same way it does mice, it may well be an anti-aging breakthrough!

SiRT1 has been discovered as the gene that lengthens lifespan through caloric restriction. When food is limited, SiRT1 is used to break down fat stores as a source of energy. It’s part of the body’s defense against starvation.

Animal experiments show that this gene is activated through caloric restriction, thereby lengthening lifespan, aiding in the metabolism of fat and cholesterol metabolism, increasing immune function, and boosting cardiovascular health. A lot of people are discovering the virtues of a calorie-restricted diet, but you should always speak to your doctor before trying it yourself.

When someone eats too much, their fat stores send out inflammatory compounds that tell the liver to make its own inflammatory. This causes free radical damage throughout the body. As a person gains weight, this level of inflammation goes up as well. The liver gets saturated with fat, which is then “cooked” by the inflammation that’s running rampant. Eventually, liver damage will result. Arteries will also become choked with fat, raising blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Leptin levels will become elevated, causing irritability and possible insulin resistance, leading to type II diabetes. Leptin brings on food cravings, and the cycle continues.

Pretty much everyone who’s overweight and has trouble with food cravings has leptin resistance, causing a false sense of starvation. Overeating and constant snacking are a prime cause of leptin resistance. People don’t have the equipment to deal with this problem, because historically, food has always been scarce.

When you begin a diet, you’ll clear the excess leptin from your body, diminishing those cravings. For a while your body will burn calories based on your “set point”, until you hit that dreaded “plateau”. You can’t really further restrict calories, because you’ll get cranky, will have trouble sleeping, and you’ll get sick easier. This stress will also cause inflammation, which is what you’re trying to avoid. You’d begin to break down muscle, which isn’t good and can lead to anorexia. Resveratrol is a great way to aid weight loss and maintain energy levels.

Resveratrol will work well when you are eating less, and have cleared excess leptin from your bloodstream. It will also work some if you aren’t dieting, but its benefits can easily be negated by a fat and calorie-laden diet. Losing weight will improve your heart health, and resveratrol will help here too. That alone makes it worth a look!

It has been shown to improve heart function in those with diabetes who’d had a heart attack. Its potent anti-inflammatory properties also help in eye and bone health, improves coordination, protects joints, as well as the liver and pancreas, and regulates cell health.

That’s quite impressive, just for one nutrient. Maybe there’s something to resveratrol after all, and surely you’ll be hearing quite a bit more about this super-nutrient in the future!

A lot of nutrients, like pantethine, carnosine, and DHA are known for their metabolism boosting and anti-aging properties. Most nutrients have some beneficial effect on the body. But, resveratrol may be at the top of the heap- it’s a prime anti-aging compound, with an extra fat-burning bonus! The pharmaceutical companies are cashing in- coming out with a multitude of supplements touted as weight-loss aids and anti-aging medicines.

Resveratrol works by activating a fat-blasting and anti-aging gene called SiRT1. It prevents weight gain on a high-fat diet, and promotes weight loss on a calorie-restricted diet. It also improves endurance and stamina for exercise. It provides a variety of health benefits, not the least of which is improved cardiovascular health.

Interest in resveratrol heightened when it was discovered to be a possible cause of the “French Paradox”, the seemingly unexplainable ability to live on a high-fat diet, while having a lower rate of heart disease. Resveratrol helps the liver to metabolize fat, and aids in the breakdown of stored fat.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol, produced in blueberries and grapes as a defense mechanism against infection, and UV radiation. Grapes growing in a damp climate have more resveratrol than almost anything else- it’s a strong antioxidant and antifungal! Resveratrol differs from grape seed extract, because it’s not a pterostilbene. These compounds are able to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and they have anti-aging properties as well.

The amount of resveratrol in red wine can range from 2-14 mg. Dietary supplements are usually taken from the roots of a plant called Japanese knotweed, a far cheaper source than grapes. Doses go from a few milligrams, to 100 mg or more. Resveratrol is quickly absorbed by the body, reaching the bloodstream in less than thirty minutes. It’s rapidly metabolized by the liver.

Other than anecdotal reports, there’s not much to go on besides a few cell studies, and some research done on small animals- but the testing that has been done is very encouraging.

Every supplement or medication that we take has its benefits and drawbacks. Side effects are something to consider, no matter what substance you’re taking. Every supplement has potential side effects. This is especially true with newer supplements- such as resveratrol- that haven’t been extensively tested or studied in people.

Understand that not all side effects are undesirable. Many previously introduced drugs have had positive (and unexpected) side effects. For example, the well-known ED drug Viagra was originally intended to help men with heart disease. It’s now the most prescribed ED drug worldwide. That example may be a bit off-color, but it reinforces the idea that side effects can be either an asset or a liability.

As far as resveratrol is concerned, most reports of side effects are anecdotal- that is, they are based more on personal accounts than on medical studies. With this lack of research, determining the benefits and risks is pretty tricky.

If you decide to take this supplement, consider that you may or may not experience one or more of these potentially negative effects.

Stomach cramping/diarrhea: occurs more frequently in resveratrol formulas that are lower-concentration (50% or less), or of poor quality. (Which is why it’s very important to choose a high quality resveratrol supplement

Common: Decreased appetite (some may see that as a bad thing).

Infrequent: Some users report a jittery feeling (like a caffeine “buzz”) soon after ingestion.

Infrequent: Tingling or numbness in the arms, hands, legs and feet. This may happen soon after you take the supplement, but is said to last only a few minutes, and usually subsides after a few days of taking resveratrol.

Rare: Skin Patches: Although rare, skin patches on legs are sometimes reported by people.

Very Rare: Joint pain/arthritis: Very rare, but this may start or increase with higher doses of resveratrol at 2 grams or more.

Very Rare: Tendinitis pain (mostly in the Achilles tendon, but has been reported elsewhere with high doses of 2 grams or more).

This list is by no means scientifically researched, but it’s compiled through personal accounts of people who have had experience with resveratrol. Tendinitis pain and numbness which occur at high doses of 2 grams or more in the extremities, seem to be the most common reported side effects, and both diminish over time.

Recently in a July 2010 study, It was shown that 8 human subjects taking 4 grams (4000 mg) daily was well tolerated however at this high dose diarrhea was observed in 6 of the 8 people in the study. Again we ask you to consider only high quality resveratrol with a 98% or 99% purity, if it’s within your budget.

Hopefully, over the next year or so, more medical studies will be done on people, and we’ll be more sure of the pros and cons of resveratrol (and able to make a more informed decision). It seems, though, that the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
